DwarfLab DWARF 3

35 mm of aperture, a STARVIS 2 sensor, a built-in dual-band filter, an equatorial mode. It is the best result per euro of the devices compared here.

For the image the l'Origin makes in 1h, it takes 3h 49m here.

This equivalence says nothing but speed. It says nothing about resolution, about the field, or about optical quality. f/2,2 on 152 mm and f/4,3 on 35 mm do not photograph the same objects. The calculation takes nothing but the published focal ratios, with sensor, sky and target held identical.

Rapport d'ouverture : the focal length divided by the diameter, written f/, and the smaller that number, the faster the image forms.

Monture azimutale : it moves in altitude and in rotation, but the field turns during the night. Monture équatoriale : one axis set on that of the Earth, so that the field no longer turns.

Where it excels

What it does well

The large emission nebulae, thanks to the dual-band filter fitted as standard and to the wide field. And travel: it fits in a shoulder bag.

Strong points

  • Built-in hydrogen and oxygen dual-band filter. The nebulae come out in one night.
  • Equatorial mode and 60 s exposures, rare at this price.
  • The field is wide: the North America or the Heart fit whole in the frame.
  • 1.3 kg: it goes hiking without a second thought.

Weak points

  • 35 mm only: small galaxies stay tiny.
  • The software moves fast. It remains less accomplished than Vaonis's.
  • The battery drops quickly in cold weather.
  • Polar alignment, setting the axis on that of the Earth, takes real learning.

In practice

Starting out, observing, setting up

  1. 01

Stacking several nights on the same object: that is where the device takes off. Eleven hours of total exposure on the Iris are worth more than three nights on three objects.

  2. 02

Dual-band filter for emission nebulae, Astro filter for galaxies and clusters.

  3. 03

The caption burnt in at the bottom of the frame takes up about 15% of the height. Frame wider than you need.

What it really produces

Here is what this device gave in my hands, over 98h 04m of exposure. No manufacturer image, no stock image. Each thumbnail keeps the aspect ratio of its sensor.

Filtre duo-bande : it lets through only the two colours of emission nebulae.
