Amas et nébuleuse par réflexion
A very young star cluster wrapped in a reflection nebula, about 2,980 light-years away in Cepheus.
In the catalogue, the thumbnail for this object is cropped in on its subject, so that it can be seen at card size. This view here is the whole photograph, as I produced it.
Herbig Ae/Be stars are found there, still forming, and two Herbig-Haro objects, those jets of matter that newborn stars throw out. The whole thing is only seven arcminutes across and shines at magnitude 11.5. It is a small faint object. It reflects light instead of emitting it, so the dual-band filter does nothing for it. What is left is the long exposure and the dark sky.
