Chaîne de Markarian
Eight galaxies lined up in the same field, about 65 million light-years away.
They are M84, M86, NGC 4435, NGC 4438, NGC 4458, NGC 4461, NGC 4473 and NGC 4477. They belong to the Virgo Cluster, which holds between 1,300 and 2,000 galaxies. Benjamin Markarian showed that some of them move together. No narrowband filter is of any use here: the light of galaxies is continuous, spread across every colour. It is the exposure time and the darkness of the sky that decide the result.
