Le Cœur et l'Âme
Two vast neighbouring clouds of gas in Cassiopeia, about 6,500 light-years away.
Each one is some sixty arcminutes across, which is two full Moons side by side. At the centre of the Heart, the cluster Melotte 15 holds a few hundred stars, whose wind hollows out the gas around them. The two only fit in the same frame with a wide field instrument. Their gas emits in hydrogen alpha, the red line of hydrogen. So the dual-band filter puts them within reach on the very first night. The most tenuous extensions, though, keep gaining hour after hour.
