Nébuleuse par réflexion

A reflection nebula about 766 light-years away, in the Perseus molecular cloud.

In the catalogue, the thumbnail for this object is cropped in on its subject, and its curve lifted slightly, so that it can be seen at card size. This view here is the whole photograph, as I produced it.

It is a very active nursery: some 150 stars there average a million years old. A score of them are throwing out jets of matter, visible as Herbig-Haro objects. Here it is lit dust, not excited gas. The dual-band filter can do nothing. Only exposure time and a dark sky bring up the blue and the trails of dust around it.
