Galaxie du Tournesol

A spiral galaxy 27 million light-years away, in Canes Venatici.

Pierre Méchain discovered it in 1779. It is the first of the twenty-four objects he brought to Messier's catalogue. It is called flocculent: instead of two clean arms, it shows a multitude of broken arcs. That is where its nickname of the Sunflower comes from. It is faint, at magnitude 9.3, on a scale where the larger the number, the less the object shines. Its core comes quickly. The outer arcs take hours and a dark sky, and no filter will bring them out any sooner.
