Nébuleuse Californie
An emission nebula about 1,500 light-years away in Perseus.
It is one of the regions of ionised hydrogen, excited gas that shines, closest to the solar system. It is vast, 160 arcminutes by 40, and the star xi Persei probably lights it. Its surface brightness is so low that it is extremely difficult to observe by eye. It makes an excellent photographic target all the same. This is exactly the case where the dual-band filter and exposure time show what the eye will never see.
