Nébuleuse de la Chauve-Souris

A reflection nebula about 1,300 light-years away, on the edge of the great Orion complex.

In the catalogue, the thumbnail for this object is cropped in on its subject, and its curve lifted slightly, so that it can be seen at card size. This view here is the whole photograph, as I produced it.

It does not produce its own light: it returns the light of young stars, most of which stay hidden by the dust. A dark cloud catalogued Lynds 1616 borders its south-western flank. Like every reflection nebula, it ignores the dual-band filter. Here, only exposure time under a broadband filter brings the faintest extensions up.
