La Lagune et la Trifide

An emission nebula, a cloud of gas that shines, 5,200 light-years away in Sagittarius.

It is a stellar nursery, and it is precisely the massive stars already born inside it that light it up, ionising the gas with their ultraviolet radiation. The Trifid is only 1.4 degrees away in the sky, and the 2.9 degrees by 2.7 framed here hold both of them. The caption on this shot announces only the Trifid, though: after 11h 23m with the dual-band filter, it is the Lagoon that fills my frame, the Trifid holding only the bottom left corner.
