Véga (α Lyrae)
The brightest star in the constellation of Lyra, and the fifth in the night sky.
In the catalogue, the thumbnail for this object is cropped in on its subject, so that it can be seen at card size. This view here is the whole photograph, as I produced it.
It is 25 light-years away from us, and its magnitude is very close to zero. It long served as the reference for brightness scales, in photometry. Other stars were measured against it. A star is not a long exposure object: it is there from the very first second. What time adds here are the background stars. A disc of dust surrounds Vega out to about 80 astronomical units, but it stays out of reach of a smart telescope.
