Vaonis Vespera Pro

A 50 mm apochromatic quadruplet in S-FPL52 glass: four lenses, with no colour fringing. 12.5 Mpx sensor, mosaics up to 50 Mpx. It is the generation before the Vespera Pro 2, and Vaonis still sells it.

This equivalence says nothing but speed. It says nothing about resolution, about the field, or about optical quality. f/2,2 on 152 mm and f/5 on 50 mm do not photograph the same objects. The calculation takes nothing but the published focal ratios, with sensor, sky and target held identical.

Rapport d'ouverture : the focal length divided by the diameter, written f/, and the smaller that number, the faster the image forms.

Where it excels

What it does well

Image quality at small diameter. And the mosaic, which gives the highest final resolution of the devices compared here.

Strong points

  • Four lenses in very low dispersion glass. Colour fringing around the stars is all but absent.
  • Mosaics up to 50 Mpx: together with the Vespera Pro 2, the highest of the devices compared here.
  • Built-in dew heater, and 11h of quoted battery life.
  • The most accomplished and the clearest software of the five.

Weak points

  • The price is high for 50 mm of aperture.
  • The filters are a paid option, not standard.
  • Alt-azimuth mount only: no equatorial mode.
  • 5 kg with the tripod: portable but not light.

In practice

Starting out, observing, setting up

    The mosaic is the real argument. Trigger it on wide fields, rather than stacking on the centre.

    The export burns a caption into the bottom of the image. Allow for the crop for web use.

    The Vespera Pro 2 succeeds it. Vaonis files it under its discontinued range on its comparison table, and yet still sells it at €2,790 on its product page, available when recorded on 14/09/2026. Both facts are true at the same time, and both entries stay published here.

    The mount type comes from Vaonis's official comparison table, which writes “alt-azimuth” for all seven models in the range, this one included.

Here is what this device gave in my hands, over 62h 37m of exposure. No manufacturer image, no stock image. Each thumbnail keeps the aspect ratio of its sensor.

Filtre duo-bande : it lets through only the two colours of emission nebulae.
