Nébuleuse de la Tête de Cheval

The Horsehead is an opaque cloud of dust, catalogued Barnard 33.

In the catalogue, the thumbnail for this object is cropped in on its subject, so that it can be seen at card size. This view here is the whole photograph, as I produced it.

It is about 1,500 light-years away in Orion, and it emits no light at all. It is seen only because it stands out in silhouette against IC 434. That ribbon of red gas shines behind it, and it is what reveals it. The case is a rare one: exposure time does not work on the object, but on its background. The higher IC 434 rises, the cleaner the silhouette becomes. And the dual-band filter speeds that rise up considerably.
