Nébuleuse du Fantôme

Two shreds of gas and dust about 550 light-years away in Cassiopeia.

In the catalogue, the thumbnail for this object is cropped in on its subject, so that it can be seen at card size. This view here is the whole photograph, as I produced it.

They sit very close to the star gamma Cassiopeiae, which lights them and erodes them at the same time. They mix the two regimes. Part of the gas re-emits its own light. Another only reflects the light of the star, which limits what the dual-band filter can bring. Very pale and drowned in the halo of a bright star, they are among the hardest targets in the catalogue. Exposure time here serves as much to bring the signal up as to keep the stray light in hand.
