Nébuleuse de la Trompe d'Éléphant

A vast star forming region in Cepheus, about 3,000 light-years away.

It covers 170 arcminutes by 140 in the sky, and the star system HD 206267 ionises its central cavity. The Elephant's Trunk is only one detail of it: a finger of dark dust twenty light-years long. Two young stars are hollowing it out from the inside. The gas is in emission and responds to the dual-band filter. The trunk itself is read in the contrast between dark and light. So it is the time accumulated on the background that draws it.
