The spiral galaxy next door to our own, 2.5 million light-years away.
It is one of the few visible to the naked eye, even under moderate light pollution. It covers six times the apparent diameter of the full Moon. So it is a wide field target, something taken in at a glance, and not a long focal length one. Its core appears in a few minutes. The rest takes hours to lift away from the sky background: the outer arms, the dust lanes, and the two satellite galaxies in the field, M32 and M110.
