Rules for Discussions

A setting that will not behave, a mount that drifts, a sky to choose, a doubt before buying. We ask, we answer, we disagree politely.

1. You write under one account only

   One person, one account, one email address. A second account backing up your own opinion is not an opinion, it is staging.

2. You argue with the subject, not with the person

   Contradiction is the whole business; insults, contempt and hints that someone is incompetent are not. A technical disagreement is written with figures.

3. You publish what is yours

   A photograph, a text or a measurement taken from somewhere else is cited, with its source and its author. The site holds to that rule on its own pages, and it holds to it here.

4. You do not publish other people's private lives

   No address, no phone number, no identity, no screenshot of a private conversation. And what you write about yourself is public in the same way: the forum has no private messaging.

5. You never advise anyone to look at the Sun without a filter

   This is the one rule on this forum that costs an eye when it is forgotten, and it holds for telescopes as much as for cameras. A post about the Sun states the filter, where it sits and what condition it is in, or it is removed without discussion.

6. One question, one topic

   You answer in the thread that exists rather than opening a second one on the same question. A forum gets read again six months later, and an answer filed somewhere else is an answer lost.

7. No advertising, no cold selling

   The Buying / Selling space is there for listings between private owners, and it is the only one. A trader who wants a presence on this site writes to the editor.

8. The forum is for people aged 15 or over

   In France, that is the age from which a person consents on their own to the processing of their data. Below it, a parent has to agree, and we have no serious way of collecting that agreement.

9. You report rather than answer

   A post that steps outside the frame is reported with the link underneath it. An indignant reply makes two posts to remove instead of one.
